People and Planet has placed the ³ÉÈËBÕ¾ fifth out of 150 universities in the UK in its University League 2016.

The campaigning group looks at all public funded universities in the country and uses public information provided by the universities to assess areas like waste and recycling, sustainable food, energy sources, engagement and education.

Katy Boom, Director of Sustainability at the ³ÉÈËBÕ¾ said: "We are delighted to have been rated once again in the top five of universities for sustainability in the UK, in People and Planet's University League.

"This is down to the collective work of the University and the Students" Union, both on campus and in the community.

"We're always looking for imaginative ways to engage our students and staff in sustainability and get them involved; we have produced a recycling guide and free issue reusable recycling bags for our student landlords; we also set up a bike borrowing scheme.

"We were finalists in the Green Gown Awards for Sustainability this year and recently hosted, and chaired, the launch meeting of the Midlands Sustainability Education Network for Further and Higher Education Institutions, which brought together figures from education, business and politics to look at how the Midlands can be more sustainable, and develop leadership skills.

"We're working very hard to manage our carbon footprint, as the University grows, and we have recruited a new energy manager who started in September. All of our future building plans aim to create a modern, very sustainable campus."

Hannah Smith, People and Planet Co-director; Research and Campaigns, said: "What impresses us most about Worcester is their consistency - the sustainable development we all need for a climate safe future provides an opportunity for culture shift, one that takes a long-term view " and the ³ÉÈËBÕ¾ have proved what's possible by doing just that and laying the foundations for environmental and social sustainability.

"The University scored 100 per cent in six of the 13 People & Planet league categories " with impressive work in renewable energy and by developing teaching and learning that aims to enable students and future communities to meet climate and social justice issues with solutions. Congratulations to everyone at Worcester for their continually progressive performance."
