Prof Kyte trained as a Physiotherapist at the University of Bradford, graduating in 1996. He went on to work in the NHS for over 10 years, rising to a position as an Extended Scope Practitioner (Trauma & Orthopaedics) at the Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust. He moved into academia as a Clinical Tutor at the University of Birmingham in 2007. In this role he was involved in the delivery of under- and post-graduate education within the department of nursing and physiotherapy, specialising in anatomy & physiology and musculoskeletal practice. He completed an MSc in Advancing Practice (Specialist Manipulative Physiotherapy) in 2009. In 2011, he successfully applied for a fully funded NIHR doctoral fellowship, completing the PhD alongside his physiotherapy teaching workload and graduating in 2015.

Teaching Interests

Prof Kyte has a Higher Education Academy Fellowship and has been involved in research-informed learning & teaching activity across a number of under- and post-graduate health-focused programmes, including: physiotherapy [BSc(Hons); MSc (pre-registration); MSc (Advancing Practice)], Medicine [Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB), Bachelor of Medical Sciences (BMedSci) Population Sciences and Humanities], Public Health [MPH] and Clinical Trials [MSc]. He employs a variety of learning and teaching methods (e.g. Inquiry-based learning, Kinesthetic Learning, Flipped Classrooms etc), including digital methods to support blended learning, and completed a PgCert in Academic Practice at the University of Birmingham in 2019.

Research Interests

Prof Kyte's primary research interests centre around health outcomes and remote symptom monitoring in the NHS. In particular, the use of patient-reported outcomes (PROs) across a range of conditions and clinical areas including chronic kidney disease, cancer and musculoskeletal care. He leads the Living with Long-Term Conditions Research Group at the ³ÉÈËBÕ¾.

Prof Kyte has a h-index of 30 and has published 76 papers in peer-reviewed journals including: Physiotherapy (Impact Factor 3.010); Manual Therapy (Impact Factor 2.158); the BMJ (Impact Factor 30.223), Journal of the American Medical association (Impact Factor 45.540), PLOS Medicine (Impact Factor 10.500), Journal of the National Cancer Institute (Impact Factor 12.589) and the Lancet (Impact Factor 60.392) and he has a current total grant income >£3 million. His work has informed the and is REF returnable.

Prof Kyte is an active member of the International Society for Quality of Life Research (ISOQOL) and Centre for Patient-Reported Outcomes Research (CPROR) at the University of Birmingham. He is a former chair of the UK National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) Living with and Beyond Cancer Methodology Workstream.

PhD Opportunities

Prof Kyte has supervised 4 doctoral students to completion. He has a track record of supporting doctoral students to secure research funding to underpin their work. In addition, he is passionate about supporting his students to disseminate their findings both nationally and internationally, through high-impact publications and conference presentations.
