Paul John gained valuable experience both in acute hospital and community settings in his home country before moving to China to pursue a career in research and academia.

He went on to research for a Ph.D. degree in Comparative Education at Beijing Normal University with distinguished Professor Lauren Misiaszek (UCLA) as his supervisor. He was also a former research fellow at the International Network on Gender, Social Justice and Praxis (University of Newcastle Australia) and a teaching fellow at a Ph.D. program at Beijing Normal University.

During his time in China, his research focused on comparative education, mentoring, and the Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS), which he heavily published and received multiple citations.

He then joined the NHS and served as a clinical educator supporting internationally-educated nurses (IENs). He also earned a fellowship from NHS England and Florence Nightingale Foundation and worked closely with international nursing and midwifery associations (INMAs) in the UK, leading engagement projects to promote awareness and champion culturally sensitive pastoral care and support. Due to his notable work, he was awarded by the Nursing Times as the Overseas Nurse of the Year in 2023 and was also a finalist as Practice Educator of the Year.

Before joining UW, he served as an academic faculty and module lead at University College Birmingham.
