Karen is Course Leader for PE and a Senior Lecturer in PE and PE and Sports Coaching. She qualified as a teacher in 1998 and has worked for a number of years as a teacher, whilst working alongside staff from the Worcestershire Local Delivery Agency to develop and deliver professional learning opportunities in PE for teachers in secondary, primary and special schools.
After teaching, Karen worked for the Youth Sport Trust as a Programme Manager for PE, where she led on developing and delivering resources and professional learning opportunities across England to support school staff teaching PE.
Karen is passionate about enhancing learning outcomes for all students and enjoys working with students in seminars, tutorials and practicals to enhance and challenge their thinking, to encourage them to be reflective and critical thinkers and learners.
Karen teaches across all three years of the undergraduate PE and PE and Sports Coaching courses, specifically focussing on modules on primary PE, gymnastics and pedagogy-based modules, to allow her to use her prior experiences to enhance the module content and student learning.
She is currently studying part time for her PhD on power relations in artistic gymnastics.

Primary Physical Education and Government strategy in England, physical activity policy, teaching and learning pedagogy and sociology.
Research Interests
Sociology in sport, specifically power relations connected to gender.
Karen is currently working on her PhD focussing on exploring power relations in competitive, non-elite artistic gymnastics: investigating gender disparities in artistic gymnastics in England.
